RT, not Sputnik, posted the update, headlined Syrian air defense thwarted ‘Israeli missile attack’ near Damascus [international] airport – state agency
I note that the attack was launched on the night of the tenth and final day of the Damascus International Trade Fair, during which many foreign businesspeople were in attendance. Presumably many of these attendees would have been at the international airport or en route during or just prior to the attack.
In other words, the attack was to target the Syrian economy and warn off foreign investors in Syria including those interested in reconstruction projects there.
SANA, Syria's state news agency, has also reported on the attack, as has Al Masdar News.
