It's not only Democrats such as John Brennan. For many years it's been an open secret in Washington that the most influential "neocons" -- 'new conservatives' -- are Communists. So do not ask why those people hate Vladimir Putin, who is famously anti-Communist, and want him taken down at any cost, and hang any sensible American foreign/defense policies.
How did it happen? They joined the Republican Party when the Democratic Party turned dovish and their buddies in the news media and the Democratic National Party kept looking the other way about their Communist associations, that's how. Besides, they were all for unending war, and that's good for business. They gained their greatest influence in the wake of 9/11.

The troll story was a lie, from start to finish, but you didn't really need the background to see through it because, as MoA's Bernhard pointed out, the story never made any sense, to begin with.
