This is what FUKUS was covering up by accusing Syrian army of chemical warfare

June 14: Trump administration releases $6.6 million in funding for Syria's 'White Helmets.'  "The decision to release the funding came a day after the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), the international chemical weapons watchdog, determined that sarin and chlorine were very likely used in a pair of chemical attacks in northern Syria in 2017."

Last week I wrote about what civilians from Ghouta told me regarding unverified claims of the Syrian Army attacking them with chemicals, but they also talked about crimes committed by terrorists and the White Helmets’ role.

Although benignly dubbed “rebels” by corporate media, the Salafist terrorist group Jaysh al-Islam are not fighting for freedom or human rights in Syria, nor are the other terrorist groups who formerly ruled in eastern Ghouta.

It was Jaysh al-Islam which imprisoned Syrian civilians in cages, using them as human shields against potential bombing, and Jaysh al-Islam was among the terrorist groups firing missiles and mortars onto civilians in Damascus, killing over 10,000.

They, Faylaq al-Rahman, and the other terrorist factions occupying the region reigned with terror, beheading men and women and starving the people.

Hellish rule of Jaysh al-Islam: Starvation and executions by sword

When I visited eastern Ghouta and the Horjilleh center for displaced people just south of Damascus—people mostly from Ghouta now—I asked about their lives under the rule of Jaysh al-Islam and others, including why they had been starving in the first place. The reply was, as I and others heard in eastern Aleppo, Madaya, and al-Waer, the terrorists stole aid and controlled all food, only selling food at extortionist prices which ordinary people could not afford.

Sabah al-Mushref spoke of the callousness of terrorists in Hammouriyeh and Zamalka towards children and how her own children used to scavenge from the garbage of terrorist leaders who had ample food.

“I was living in Zamalka, my children were almost dead of hunger, my daughter’s skin had turned yellow, she was malnourished,” Sabah told me. “I took her to the medical point, they said there was no medicine. I said, ‘my daughter is dying, what should I do?!’ They told me the medical point was only for Douma citizens. I went to the representative of Zamalka, I begged him, ‘Please give me anything for my children, they are starving, they haven’t eaten anything for two days.’ He said, ‘What is here is only for Zamalka citizens, you are from Marj al-Sultan, go to your representative. There is no aid for you here.’”

When I spoke with Sabah, she was with three other people from eastern Ghouta areas. Their testimonies spilled out, each one worse as they spoke out loud of the horrors they had lived through.

Mahmoud Souliman Khaled, 28, from Douma, spoke of his imprisonment and torture by Jaysh al-Islam.

“They stopped me at night, I was on my way to get something. They suspected that I was working for the regime, helping the army. They took me to al-Taoubah prison, where they tortured me. They would tie me to a chair and shock my hands or the top of my toes. They would tie two wires to my toes then plug the other end to the inverter and shock me. They would keep doing that until you confess to something. I didn’t confess, because I had nothing to confess to. They tortured me for two days. What they did caused me to have a severe myopia, it felt like electricity came out of my eyes.”

Khaled spoke of an execution he witnessed in Douma. “They came in a truck with a 23mm (anti-aircraft) machine gun and blew off his head. Then, they accused the Syrian Army of killing him.” A photo on his mobile phone showed a headless man sitting in a chair, no remnants of shelling.

“Jaysh al-Islam blew his head off for selling food cheaply, because they wanted to keep prices high, so that people stay impoverished and would have to work for them in tunneling or join them in fighting.”

In Kafr Batna on May 2 this year, the streets were busy with normal life and the clean-up process, electricity workers restoring power to the town. Outside a shop selling shawarma, Mou’taz Al-Aghdar spoke of being imprisoned for 15 days by Jaysh al-Islam for selling rice.

“They confiscated our goods and imprisoned us. Nobody was allowed to work unless that it was under control.”

He spoke of the executions by sword, and of disappeared children and adults, some returned with organs missing.

“We live in a small town, people started to talk: a child was kidnapped here, another one there... Some people were kidnapped and their organs were taken. A child was buried, he was found dead in a barn covered with straw, he was tied and covered with straw while he was still alive. We didn’t know who did it.” Other civilians from Ghouta have spoken of organ theft.

Further on, I encountered Mohammad Shakr, who pointed to the central roundabout and spoke of terrorists’ executions there.

“They’d bring people here and execute them, sometimes with a sword and other times with a gun. It was very normal for them. Now, since the Syrian Army came here, people can walk around and move freely. But before, you wouldn’t see anyone on the road.”

In an ice cream shop near the square, Abdallah Darbou also said he’d seen such executions. He also spoke of protests.

“Many times, we held protests against the terrorists, because we were starving, they were killing us. Sometimes they shot on us during the protests. They destroyed us, they really destroyed us. “The Syrian regime didn’t do that to us, when the army entered here they distributed bread to us, before that we only saw bread in photos.”

Walking around Douma on April 29, I met Yahya Mohammed Hamo, selling oranges on a push cart. When I asked him what life had been like under Jaysh al-Islam, he replied, “hunger, hunger, and hunger. If they have a religion, be cursed that religion. Religion doesn’t make them starve you.”

Men at a vegetable and fruit stand, who had replied with a resounding ‘no’ when I asked them about the chemical allegations, also spoke of the aid that was sent into Douma. An older man, exaggerating to make his point that there was ample food in Douma, said it was enough to last five years, but that the terrorists had deprived them of it.

I asked about the agricultural fields I’d seen when entering Douma. The reply was that Jaysh al-Islam had control over everything, the fertile land, the livestock. A youth told me that before the terrorists left Douma on the buses, they shot all the animals.

The men spoke of executions, making a throat-slitting gesture. A younger man recounted another murder, when the executioner put a pistol in someone’s mouth and pulled the trigger.

“Terrorism, they are the literal meaning of terrorism,” Toufik Zahra, the stand owner, said.

White Helmets not so benevolent, worked with terrorists

To my question on whether the White Helmets were helping people, Zahra replied:

“The civil defence was only for the terrorist groups, only for them, for Jaysh al-Islam.” This was reiterated by Mahmoud Mahmoud al-Hammouri, working in a shop down the street, who said: “The White Helmets are called civil defence. They were supposedly for the civilians but they were the contrary, they were for Jaysh al-Islam.”

In Kafr Batna, the Shawarma vendor, Mou'taz Al-Aghdar, said, “Jaysh Al-Islam used to attack us wearing a white helmet one day and leaving it behind another day.” The young man in the ice cream shop, Abdallah, replied that he didn’t know anything about the White Helmets because he and civilians in general weren’t allowed to go near them.

That in itself is strange, given their supposed focus is saving civilians, and given that the White Helmets had centers in Douma, Zamalka, and Saqba. The White Helmets center in Saqba wasless than 500 meters away from Kafr Batna. Notably, it was also just 200 meters down a lane from a building where Faylaq al-Rahman manufactured vast amounts of missiles and mortars.

Marwan Qreisheh, in the Horjilleh center, had a lot to say about the White Helmets.

“The first civil defense members who arrived to Ghouta three or four years ago came from foreign countries, they weren’t Arabs, didn’t speak Arabic. They were the terrorists’ defense, they used to terrorize. They had plenty of money and used it to attract people to join the civil defense.

When the White Helmets wanted to go somewhere, terrorists used to go with them and open the roads for them. The moment they would arrive at a place where they wanted to fake an attack, they threw 10 smoke bombs, causing heavy smoke, you couldn’t see anything. They used to shoot people, and after the smoke cleared, they start filming. It was impossible to say a word because they would kill you, they would empty their gun on you immediately.

If someone’s arm veins were cut, they would amputate immediately and stitch the wound, while filming. If someone’s leg was injured because of bullet, a piece of glass, or anything, their first treatment was amputation.”

Qreisheh’s claims about amputation were echoed by Hanadi Shakr, from Saqba, who worked for a year as a nurse until her husband, who had joined Jaysh al-Islam, forced her to quit.

“Every time there was a case that was a bit severe, they would say you must amputate this person. They would say that we are in short of medical supplies and so amputation is the best choice. They didn’t used to treat people. Even people who had minor surgery, they would just amputate it.”

Claims of lack of medical supplies turned out to be false, as in eastern Aleppo. In an underground hospital in Saqba alone, I saw rooms full of medicines and stolen medical equipment. Syrian journalists documented such stores elsewhere in eastern Ghouta.

According to Hanadi Shakr, “All of the medical and food aid that was brought in, it would just vanish, they would sell it and take the money. Everything went to the leaders of the terrorist factions.”

When eastern Ghouta was being liberated, corporate media was busy churning out fake reports of massacres, just as corporate media did when Aleppo was being liberated. They produced stories emanating from supporters of terrorist factions, always blaming the Syrian government for starvation, and above all, whitewashing the crimes and terrorism of extremist groups occupying eastern Ghouta.

In reality, Ghouta civilians had much to say about their captors’ crimes, and also about their relief at being liberated by the Syrian Army, but corporate media isn’t interested it doesn’t fit their regime-change narrative.

Infighting, assassinations as deadline nears UPDATED

UPDATE
US threatens decisive ‘response’ if Syrian Army launches southern Syria offensive
"These public figures are being targeted for working with the Damascus government to reach a peaceful solution in the southern governorates of Daraa and al-Quneitra"

On Wednesday, the day before Ramadan ended, the Syrian army made a final offer to militants in the south to negotiate a peace deal, and gave them 48 hours to decide. I don't know the time on Wednesday when the ultimatum was announced but the deadline is today and it's now 12:30 PM Syria time.

Fierce Infighting Reported among Terrorists in Southern Syria as Army Prepares for Operations
Thursday, June 14, 2018 - 2:41
FARS

TEHRAN (FNA)- Heavy infighting and differences were reported among a number of terrorist groups in Southern Syria as the army is preparing to launch an imminent assault in the region.

Informed sources in Southern Syria reported on Thursday that terrorist groups in Dara'a and the nearby regions have engaged in heavy infighting.

They added that despite differences among members of Shabab al-Senah Brigade terrorists in Basri al-Sham, they want their leaders to endorse the peace plan with the Syrian government but Ahmad al-Qoudah, the commander of the group, is opposed to the plan.

Reports also said that the terrorist groups operating under the umbrella group of Tajamo al-Wieh al-Amri, one of the lagest branches of the Free Syria Army are defecting the FSA, adding that Ansar al-Shariat Brigade has joined the Jeish (Army of) Ahrar al-Ashayer after defection.

Meantime, the impending attack of the Syrian army in the Southern parts of the country has filled the terrorist groups with panic and persuaded some of them to join the government's peace plan.

The Syrian army gave a last ultimatum to the terrorist groups in the Southern provinces of Dara'a and Quneitra on Wednesday to lay down arms and join the reconciliation plan.

The army gave a 48-hour-long ultimatum to the terrorists in Dara'a and Quneitra to join the peace plan in the region and surrender to the government forces.

In the meantime, local sources reported that commanders of terrorist groups have not accepted yet the Russian Reconciliation Centers' call for peace talks, adding that a wave of disunity and defection has started in the terrorist front over the peace agreement.

The army has in recent days sent a large volume of military equipment and a large number of forces to prepare for a large-scale operation in the region.

MILITANTS ASSASSINATE ANOTHER MEMBER OF RECONCILIATION COMMITTEE IN SOUTHERN SYRIA
June 14, 2018
SouthFront

On June 14, unknown gunmen shot and killed Doctor Musa Qanbas, a member of the reconciliation committee in southern Syria, in front of his clinic in the town of al-Harra in the northwestern Daraa countryside, according to the Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA).
So far, no group has claimed responsibility for the assassination of Doc. Qanbas. However, Syrian pro-government activists believe that the newly formed Ahrar Tell al-Harrah Brigade may have been behind the crime. The group vowed to work against the Syrian Arab Army and Russia when it was first formed on May 4.
This is not the first attack on the members of the reconciliation committee in southern Syria. On June 2, three members of the committee named “Tufiq al-Ghunim”, “Mohamad al-Ghunim” and “Mufaq al-Bargas” were assassinated in the northeastern Daraa countryside.
According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR), at least twelve members of the committee were assassinated by unknown gunmen during the last two months.
These public figures are being targeted for working with the Damascus government to reach a peaceful solution in the southern governorates of Daraa and al-Quneitra. Syria’s President Bashar al-Assad confirmed that such efforts are taking place during an interview on June 13 and said that Israel and the U.S. are working against them.

"If the Kurds do not now make peace with Damascus, they are fools".

The quote is from Col. Pat Lang's pithy analysis for Sic Semper Tyrannis, The Turks are playing us -- "us" meaning Americans. The Colonel is entirely right. But playing Americans is a national pastime in too many countries to name.

Will Americans ever wise up? Wising up signifies that one is no longer so high up on the mountain there's no need to look down. Same with following good advice from an underling: it's putting the underling's head almost as high as yours.

That explains why the same incompetents keep being returned to power, lifetime after lifetime: they are competent where it really counts, which is to never relinquish even a molecule of authority no matter how destructive this might turn out to be.

Have an argument with that system of deciding who should be on top? Take your argument to human nature; see how far you get. It's the way things are. Wisdom is learning to work with the system and praying like mad to the gods to save you from the worst consequences.

I suppose I should add that it's observations like the above which prompted one of my teachers to tell me I'd become a nihilist.

A nihilist wouldn't pray.

As to the Kurds in Syria -- the Colonel gave good advice; I hope they consider their survival more important than keeping up appearances, and take the advice.

Syrian Army Gives Last Ultimatum to Terrorists to Surrender in Dara'a, Quneitra
June 13, 2014
FARS

TEHRAN (FNA)- The Syrian Army gave last ultimatum to the terrorist groups in the Southern provinces of Dara'a and Quneitra on Wednesday to lay down arms and join the reconciliation plan.

The army gave a 48-hour-long ultimatum to the terrorists in Dara'a and Quneitra to join the peace plan in the region and surrender to the government forces.

In the meantime, local sources reported that commanders of terrorist groups have not yet accepted the Russian Reconciliation Centers' call for peace talks, adding that a wave of disunity and defection has started in the terrorist front over the peace agreement.

The army has in recent day sent a large volume of military equipment and a large number of forces to prepare for an imminent large-scale operation in the region.

In a similar development on Tuesday, the army forwarded a large number of forces and a large volume of equipment to the Death Triangle in Northern Dara'a.

Several military vehicles, a number of personnel carrier vehicles and truck carrying heavy weapons deployed to the towns of al-Habariyeh, Deir al-Adas and Fatima hills in Northern Dara'a.

Deir al-Adas is one of the most important contact lines of the army with terrorists in Northern Dara'a.

The Death Triangle is among the most strategic regions in Southern Syria connecting Dara'a province to Quneitra and Western Damascus.

Well-informed sources reported that the terrorist commanders in Dara'a have rejected the Humeimim-based Russian Reconciliation Center's call for direct talks, adding that the terrorists are insisting on confronting the army's operation in the South.

The Free Syrian Army has also kept its militants in regiments 463, 404 and 406 in Quneitra on alert to face the Damascus forces large-scale operation in Southern Syria.

Sputnik, did a Syrian army commander really say that?

Sputnik; June 12:
The Syrian army is reinforcing its air defenses near the Golan frontier as tensions with Israel continue, a Syrian army commander said on Tuesday.

According to the commander, in the coming days additional backup is set to be deployed as the conflict has moved toward the southwest region of the country, Reuters reported.
The placement of the Russian-made Pantsir S1 is intended “to renew the air defense system against Israel in the first degree,” Reuters reported the commander as saying. [...]
I don't like to disturb a Sputnik reporter's beauty sleep, but I should not have to be doing your homework. Now go back and read the Reuters report you quoted:

Syrian army boosts air defenses near Golan frontier: pro-Assad commander

It's right in the headline; can't miss it. But to be crystal clear here's the first paragraph of the report:
BEIRUT (Reuters) - The Syrian army has reinforced its anti-aircraft defenses near the frontier with the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights, a commander in the regional alliance that backs President Bashar al-Assad said on Tuesday.
Does that sound like a Syrian army commander to you? Does it sound like the Reuters report you quoted?

And I note you didn't provide a link to the Reuters report, so then I had to go to Google and find the report. Why did I do this? Because I attempt to verify every quote I read in every publication and if I can't, the quote doesn't get onto my blog.
As to whether the allied commander's claim is correct -- how should Reuters know? They're phoning in from Beirut, and unlike the guy who runs Al-Masdar News, who also phones in from Beirut, Reuters doesn't have lots of friends in the Syrian army.

But one would think the Russian government, of which Sputnik is a part, would be able to scare up their own source inside the Syrian army to check the authenticity of the commander's claim. That they haven't -- that they're falling back on misquoting Reuters -- raises a question about the reliability of the sensational claim.

As to whether Al-Masdar New has reported on the commander's claim -- nope.

Think I'm making a mountain out a molehill? It's just such molehills that have helped fuel the Syrian war -- and all long-running wars. But I'm picking on Sputnik to give a demonstration of what it takes to follow war news. Blink and  you're lost.

"Kim Commits to 'Complete Denuclearization of Korean Peninsula' in Joint Document"

BREAKING NEWS
Sputnik

Donald Trump and Kim Jong-un signed a document after a historic summit in Singapore on June, 12. Addressing the results of the negotiations, Trump said North Korea's denuclearization process will be starting "very quickly," while North Korean leader stated, that the world was about to see "a major change."

Kim Jong-un confirmed his commitment to "complete denuclearization of Korean Peninsula", in a joint document signed with President Trump at Singapore on Tuesday.
According to the press, the text does not mention "complete, verifiable and irreversible denuclearization," however, it reaffirms the Panmunjom Declaration, signed by Kim on April 27, 2018.
Both countries also commit to recovering prisoners of war and missing in action remains, "including the immediate repatriation of those already identified."

Russian Defense Ministry warns of new fabricated chemical provocation in Deir Ezzor
June 11, 2018
SANA [Syria's state news agency]

(Moscow) The Russian Defense Ministry has revealed that terrorist organizations have brought canisters containing chlorine to the town of Jafra field in Deir Ezzor province to stage another chemical attack and accuse the Syrian army of it.

The Ministry’s spokesman Major General Igor Konashnikov cited in a press statement ‘confirmed information’ to the effect that terrorist groups, aided and abetted by US special forces, are preparing a new provocation involving toxic agents in Deir Ezzor province.

According to Konashnikov, the planned attack will be filmed and used to justify an aerial shelling by the International Coalition against Syrian governmental targets and terrorist attacks against Syrian army sites in the area.

The above news has been circulating for days if not weeks. The same thing happened in the runup to the Syrian military's bombing campaign in Douma: the Russians warning of a false-flag operation.

Are the Russians just being jumpy given the history of accusations against Syria's government regarding chemical weapon attacks? I have no idea. I just know I'm not willing to ignore such a warning again.

I also know it's an established fact that every time the Syrian military is on the verge of scoring a big victory or has just done so -- darn if an alleged chemical attack occurs, followed by screaming headlines that Syria's regime is responsible. The last two times the headlines have been followed by cruise missiles fired by the Trump regime.

Is the SAA again on the verge of another big victory? They're on the verge of their Southern Offensive, set to launch this week. If they achieve victory in that battle, the hottest phase of the Syrian war is as much over. Unless Turkey stages a provocation, or the U.S. stages a provocation, or the U.K. or France or Israel or --

SYRIAN FORCES FOIL MILITANTS’ OFFENSIVE ON PALMYRA FROM US-HELD AREA OF AT-TANF
June 11, 2018
SouthFront
Pro-government forces, supported by the Russian Aerospace Forces, have foiled a militant attack on the government-held ancient city of Palmyra from the US-held area of Al-Tanf in eastern Syria, the Russian military said in a statement on June 11.
According to the statement, the development took place on the same day, early in the morning (4:00 am GMT +3). Syrian troops reportedly detected a group of militants with motorcycles and vehicles armed with machine guns near Tall Ghurab. Five militants were killed and a vehicle and a motorcycle were destroyed in the erupted clashes.
The statement added that attempts by militants to carry out operations from the Al-Tanf area are carried out on a regular basis.
Oh I see; it was a typo. I wish you could send money to those people at SouthFront; they really could use it. You can't imagine what your donation of 10 dollars or euros can accomplish in the service of good reporting on the Syrian War. I joke on occasion about SouthFront because I like how hard they work, but this is no joke; please donate to them.

Green Lake, the largest freshwater lake on Hawaii's Big Island, has completely disappeared, another victim of the Kilauea volcano, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
Lava from Fissure 8 begin pouring into the lake on June 2, turning it into a roiling cauldron. A thick, white plume of water vapor billowed hundreds of feet over the lake. It took only an hour and half for the molten rock to evaporate the entire body of water, which was about 200 feet deep.

Local source: U.S.-backed SDF forcing children to loot houses in Raqqa

TEHRAN (FNA - June 10)- The US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) have started forcing children to take part in organized crime and robbery in Raqqa city.

The Washington-backed SDF has started using children from 7 to 14 years of age for stealing assets of civilians from houses in Raqqa.

A local source said that a number of children that had been arrested while stealing peoples' properties and possessions have disclosed that the SDF militias forced them to join the US-backed group at a base near Bimo Bank and forced them to participate in looting people's houses in Raqqa.

Damascus government said on Wednesday that the illegitimate US-led International Coalition was targeting civilians in the villages of Hasaka, Raqqa and Deir Ezzur as a retribution for their refusal to join US-allied separatist militias.

In a letter addressed to the UN Secretary-General and President of the United Nations Security Council, Damascus lambasted the Coalition’s incessant aggressions targeting innocent Syrian civilians and Syria’s sovereignty, safety and territorial integrity.

Citing a slew of atrocities the Coalition perpetrated in the villages of al-Hasaka, which left scores of civilians dead and many others injured, the Foreign Ministry stressed that the attacks are intended to punish the locals for their reluctance to join separatist militias allied to the United States.

According to the letter, the US has been restructuring relations with ISIL terrorists, integrating some within these militias and using others in mounting attacks against the Syrian Arab Army’s sites with a view to recapturing areas the Syrian army and allies have liberated from terrorism.

The letter added that the Coalition had not balked at providing overt military backing to ISIL terrorists against the Syrian army, the latest of which was on May 24 when its warplanes targeted military outposts for the Syrian army between Albu Kamal and Humeimeh in Deir Ezzur countryside 24 hours after the Syrian army managed to abort ISIL attack against the sites.

The Coalition’s sole aim is to undermine Syria’s sovereignty, safety and territorial integrity and prolong the crisis in it which contravenes the UN Security Council’s resolutions, the letter noted.

The Ministry urged the Coalition’s member country to pull out of this “outrageous coalition”, calling on the UNSC to assume its responsibilities in preserving international peace and security and take immediate action to end its massacres.

The letter also called for terminating the illegal US and foreign presence on the Syrian territories and to call a halt to the US plans in support of terrorism.

“The US hostile polices in Syria, the region and the world lack ethical grounds because it has become part and parcel of the threats which endanger international peace and security,” the letter concluded.

The US-led coalition has been conducting airstrikes against what are said to be ISIL targets inside Syria since September 2014 without any authorization from the Damascus government or a UN mandate.

EVERY U.S. MOVE IN SYRIA HAS BACKFIRED. Yet more on the Arab anti-US uprising.in Syria

"It was a major event, which badly discredited the US with the local Sunnis and only helped Assad."

Learning about the Sunni Arab uprising that's been building against the U.S. in Syria is like watching a 100-vehicle pileup on a freeway. The chain reaction of collisions is so awful, so inevitable, it's mesmerizing.
[...]
The Sunni-Kurd tensions in this region are the main challenge to the US strategy in Syria. The incidents between local Sunnis and Kurds, combined with Damascus’ efforts to expand its presence east of the Euphrates, show that the Pentagon’s worst-case scenario is being enacted [realized]. They assumed that the reliance on the Kurds would be the main obstacle in [securing] the loyalty of local Sunni Arabs, which are essential to the US strategy to create political and military alternatives to Damascus in Syria’s north.
Apart from oil regions, such incidents started to occur in other parts of Syria’s north. Hence the May coalition airstrikes in Hasakah province and the growing tensions in Raqqa province. The most recent direct Sunni-Kurd clash took place there on March 26. Sunni protests have started in western parts of Raqqa. They occurred after Kurdish SDF fighters arrested the leader of Bu-Hamis tribe, Sheikh Bashir Hamdan al-Khashar. The demonstrations, which escalated to armed clashes with SDF, involved inhabitants of El-Mansur and other towns in the western part of the province.
Raqqa inhabitants are unhappy that SDF is forcing them to pay dues to support operations against Turkish forces near Afrin. People in Et-Tabka say SDF demanded each family pay 500 Syrian pounds.
In Deir-es-Zor, the conflict is over control of oil fields. There the Sunni-Kurdish conflict will be all the harsher. What’s most dangerous to the Americans is that their support for SDF Kurds may directly involve US troops in the clashes. But the Kurds can’t on their own resist government forces and local Sunnis.
The most explosive situation is in the Abu Hammam region, close to the Konako oil and gas facility captured by the Kurds and Americans, and which is the main center of the trial of strength by the opposing sides. On May 3, several hundred SDF fighters attacked this town and the nearby base of the Syrian Guard (Kuvat Nukba as-Suria), which is represented by armed militias from local Arab tribes.
The attack was caused by the refusal to submit to Kurdish commanders’ orders to move to Hasakah. The fighting lasted 5 days. After realizing they [couldn't] defeat the Syrian Guard on their own, SDF consulted with their US masters and on May 11 gave Abu Hammam an ultimatum to give up their weapons or be declared ISIS supporters.
Afterwards the city was struck by US aircraft, with the civilian losses being on the conscience of the Kurdish opposition. It was a major event, which badly discredited the US [with] the local Sunnis and only helped Assad.
In this situation Arab Sunni tribes which so far haven’t established cooperation with Damascus will have to make a choice. With corresponding Damascus guarantees concerning socio-economic autonomy including oil profit-sharing, Sunnis would move toward the federal center, not the Kurds.
One can promise the Sunnis anything since the main task right now is pushing out US and Kurdish forces from Deir-es-Zor with their help, which incidentally would create a dangerous precedent for the Pentagon in other Sunni areas.

What the heck is going on? Daily Mail publishes Hala Jaber interview with Assad

Hala Jaber is an award-winning journalist who got into hot water at the (London) Sunday Times a few years ago when a 'leak' suggested she was a 'Assad regime' friendly. Why, then would Britain's famously anti-Assad Daily Mail send her to interview Assad -- and why at this juncture?

Anyhow, I suspect Jaber told Assad that the attention span of Mail readers is quite short so he'd have to give very compact replies to her hardball questions. That could explain his frenetic hand-waving while he spoke lol -- and his tone, which I think was not so much angry as rushed. She shoehorned 22 questions into a six-minute interview and Assad answered them all.

SANA has posted the complete transcript and video of the  interview with Arabic translation but the Daily Mail also has the video minus the Arabic script, and their headline and Jaber's report on the interview are more fun to read than SANA's prose:

SANA headline:

"President al-Assad to Mail on Sunday: UK publicly supported White Helmets that are a branch of Al Qaeda, US and UK existence in Syria is invasion"

Daily Mail headline

"I use chemicals? Prove it! Syrian President Assad brands gas attacks 'fake news' and calls Theresa May a 'colonialist and a liar' in astonishing face to face interview"

More on 'popular' uprising against U.S. military involvement with Syria

If this continues to ratchet up we can look forward to an al Qaeda faction rebranding themselves Martyrs for Assad. I'm not sure that's a joke. AQ Central always pays close attention to wind direction.

TEHRAN (FNA)- Tens of members of the US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) stopped cooperation with the militia group after growing tension between the SDF and civilians in Raqqa city on Saturday.

Over 30 SDF militias defected from the Washington-backed SDF in Raqqa city after their commander ordered them to storm protesting civilians in the city.

In the meantime, a sum of 300 Arab members of the SDF that had been dispatched to Raqqa from their positions in Northeastern Syria rejected obeying their commanders' orders to crack down on popular uprising in region and withdrew from their new positions in the city.

Local sources said that yet the SDF continued their crackdown on protesters in Raqqa, adding that the SDF has set up over 15 checkpoints in residential areas in the city and its militias have been patrolling regularly across the city.

More US-Backed Militias Assassinated by Unknown Gunmen in Northeastern, Eastern Syria
June 9, 2018
FARS

TEHRAN (FNA)- Almost fifty gunmen of the US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) have been killed in different assassination operations in a region between the provinces of Hasaka and Deir Ezzur in the last two weeks, well-informed sources reported on Saturday.

The sources said that the US-backed SDF suffered almost fifty casualties in several assassination operations in a region at Deir Ezzur-Hasaka border, adding that the SDF has been forced to cut off al-Kharafi road between the two Eastern provinces after the attacks.

The sources said a sum of 45 SDF members, including two commanders, were killed in several blasts along the al-Kharafi road near the village of Roweished on June 2.

The sources went on to say that the bodies of two SDF gunmen were also found on the road connecting the village of Um Madafeh to al-Malaheh West of al-Shadadi region, adding that the SDF has embarked on arresting and investigating people in al-Arishe, al-Shadadi and Merkadeh region in Southern Hasaka after the assault.

In the meantime, other sources in Northern Hasaka reported that four more SDF militias were killed in a booby-trap explosion in the village of Tal Khanazir.

Last week, the SDF opened fire at civilians that demonstrated against the SDF and called for their expulsion from Raqqa city.

The popular uprising occurred after the Kurdish militias dispatched more troops and equipment to al-Makeft East of al-Romeileh and erected several checkpoints.

The SDF deployed forces in Mashlab, al-Romeileh, Seif al-Dowlaeh, al-Sabahiyeh and al-Dar'eiyeh neighborhoods in Raqqa city to disperse people.

In the meantime, Kurdish security forces arrested 58 renowned figures in Hasaka province after they tried to leave Hasaka for Aleppo city to take part in a conference about occupation by the US army and Turkish troops.

Tensions are rising between civilians and the SDF in the entire territories that are under the Kurdish militias' control.

Syria's M5 Highway

This is one of the prettiest sights I've seen this year

REUTERS / Omar Sanadiki

You're looking at the M5 highway between Homs and Hamas, which had been closed for seven years; it was officially reopened on June 6 after Syrian Army engineers repaired the 47 kilometers (29 miles). FARS has a one-minute video of heavy traffic on a stretch of the reopened "highway of peace" as it's also called, but a May 19 report/analysis at Moon of Alabama highlights the vital importance of clearing the entire highway:
[...]
Until two weeks ago a large area around al-Rastan between Homs and Hama was still held by mostly local "rebel" forces. The Syrian government sent its Tiger forces and an ultimatum - give up or die. The "rebels" decided to avoid a fight which they would surely have lost. They agreed to be evacuated and were dumped into Idlib. Al-Rastan is back in government hands. This move freed the M5 highway between Homs and Hama.
The M5 highway is the main north-south artery of Syria. It connects Gaziantep in Turkey with Amman in Jordan. The highway runs through the main Syrian cities of Aleppo, Hama, Homs and Damascus. Before the war started all transit traffic between Turkey and the rich Gulf countries as well as most of the internal Syrian commerce ran along this road. Turkey, Syria and Jordan have a common economic interest in securing and reopening this lifeline.
The next strategic task for the Syrian army is therefore to secure the M5 highway in its full length.
[...]
MoA continues with a discussion that includes readable maps on how the task can be accomplished.

Say, whatever happened to America's anti-war activists?

1972 American protests against the U.S. war in Vietnam

Just wondering why massive protests against U.S. wars haven't materialized on American streets. For a time the explanation was that the activists deliberately looked the other way no matter what President Obama did on the foreign front because they supported his domestic policies. But the anti-war Left supposedly hates Trump's domestic agenda; why, then, aren't they organizing large protests against his foreign agenda, which is stuffed with military actions around the world?

"US military patrols streets of Manbij after Kurdish forces withdraw - video"

By Leith Aboufadel
June 8, 2016
AMN (Al-Masdar News)

[AMN has posted a pix and video of the U.S. troops on patrol]

BEIRUT, LEBANON (11:50 P.M.) – The U.S. military has begun patrolling the streets of Manbij, following the withdrawal of the Kurdish-led People’s Protection Units (YPG).

Video footage of the U.S. troops patrolling Manbij was released by pro-SDF media activists on Thursday; it shows the troops meeting with civilians and checking different parts of the city to ensure its security.

Recently the U.S., France, and Turkey agreed to take over the city from the YPG in order to [prevent] the Turkish military from launching an offensive to capture Manbij.

Also inside the city is the Manbij Military Council, which is  comprised of local Arabs who helped capture the area from the Islamic State (ISIS) in 2016.

Elijah Magnier's latest Syrian War sitrep is a 'must' listen as the war enters the most dangerous phase

SouthFront's interview today with Elijah J. Magnier is posted at YouTube but I hope you will pick up the video at the SouthFront site. I've poked fun at SF about their war maps, but I am grateful to them for trying, on a shoestring budget, to bring accurate daily information on the Syrian war to the English-speaking Western public.

Their experiment with 'live feeds' is still, well, experimental so about the first minute of the feed gets off a rocky start and the interviewer's voice is plagued throughout by an echo, but Magnier's answers, in English, are wonderfully clear as are his insights. He is one of the very few independent observers of the Syrian War with lengthy experience analyzing conflict situations in the Middle East region.

Magnier's articles for his website are translated into a number of languages but here is the link for the articles available in English. All articles currently shown at the site, even the 'dated' ones, are important reads for those trying to understand the incredibly complicated situation of the Syrian war. He also has a Twitter page.

The SF discussion with Magnier on the Syrian situation takes up about a half hour of the 48 minute interview, with the rest about Magnier's forthcoming book on Hezbollah. Yes a half hour is an investment of time, but not when I think of how much time I've wasted over the years plowing through Syrian War analyses from people whose idea of a sitrep is wild guessing. Magnier actually knows what he's talking about.

Health Watch: brain does crucial maintenance while its host sleeps

I note the researchers are talking about the benefit of a VERY SMALL amount of wine.

June 6, 2018
The Telegraph

[emphasis mine throughout]

The brain has an internal drain which needs to be kept clear to prevent neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s, scientists believe.

Researchers at University College London (UCL) have discovered a combination of sleep, exercise and a small amount of alcohol all help stimulate the ‘brain drain’, preventing the dangerous build up of sticky plaques which drive dementia.

Scientists have known for some time that regular exercise and getting a good night’s rest help prevent mental decline, but until now did not know how.

But animals studies have shown that they boost the brain's self-cleaning, or glymphatic, system which clears out amyloid protein which clumps together and prevents brain cells from communicating with each other.

Dr Ian Harrison, from University College London, told the Cheltenham Science Festival that research was now focusing on finding ways of preventing the glymphatic system from failing.

He said studies had shown that the system is 60 per cent more active at night proving that sleep is crucial for its correct function.
[Isn't the emphasis on the amount of sleep, not whether it's done in the night or daytime? Asked Pundita the night owl.]

"This is good evidence that the glymphatic system is active during sleep,” said Dr Harrison. “If that is anything to go by we should all be sleeping a lot more than we are.

"That kind of makes sense because, if you think about it, when your brain is active during the day these brain cells are going to be actively producing all these waste products, so it is only at night when our brain switches off that it has the chance to switch on our glymphatic system and get rid of all these waste products."

Dr Harrison said studies in mice had shown similar results with exercise.

"When the animals have voluntary access to exercise there is massive increase in the amount of lymphatic function," he said.

"The research has postulated that it is the increase in heart rate that drives this cerebrospinal fluid into the brain."

They also treated mice with low-level, intermediate and high-level doses of alcohol for 30 days and looked at the impact upon the glymphatic function.

He said that with low-level doses of alcohol - the equivalent of a third of a unit a day - there was a 30 per cent to 40 per cent increase in the brain's self-cleaning but a corresponding reduction following exposure to both intermediate and high-levels of alcohol.

"So 25ml of wine could actually increase your glymphatic system, according to this mouse study," Dr Harrison said. "But the intermediate dose of one unit of alcohol - a small dose of wine - suggests that if the mouse data can be extrapolated the lymphatic system can be lowered.

"So, sleep more, exercise and, as the data suggests, you can have a drink, but only a third of a unit of wine per day."

NATO preps to go to war against Russia

U.S. pushes NATO to ready more forces to deter Russian threat; Reuters, June 5
BRUSSELS/WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The United States is pressing its European allies to get more NATO battalions, ships and planes ready for combat, officials say, in a fresh move to shore up NATO’s deterrence against any Russian attack.
U.S. Secretary of Defence Jim Mattis will seek broad agreement for the plan in Brussels on Thursday when alliance defence ministers meet, laying the ground for endorsement by NATO leaders at a summit in July, four U.S. and NATO officials and diplomats told Reuters.
Known as 30-30-30-30, the plan would require NATO to have 30 land battalions, 30 air fighter squadrons and 30 ships ready to deploy within 30 days of being put on alert.

Could a Putin-Trump summit hobble NATO's gallop toward war? The prognosis is not good but where there's life there's hope and all that. Here are the podcast links to John Batchelor's conversation last night with Steve Cohen on the escalating war propaganda against Russia and Steve's informed observations about what a summit could accomplish:
