A law enforcement source confirmed the arrest to NBC News.

The Mexican Navy carried out the operation, according to leading Mexican newspaper El Universal. The navy, seen as less corruptible than the country's police forces and army, has taken the lead in fighting the cartels.

The Mexican Navy said in a statement that marines, acting on a tip, stormed into a home in the town of Los Mochis before dawn. They were fired on from inside the building. Five suspects were killed and six others arrested, according to the statement.

The notorious Mexican drug lord Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman has been arrested after his scandalous prison break last year, the Mexican president announced via his Twitter page.

“Mission completed: we've got him. I’d like to inform the Mexicans that Joaquin Guzman Loera has been detained,” Enrique Pena Nieto wrote.

El Chapo (aka “Shorty”) is considered to be Mexico’s top drug lord and head of the Sinaloa cartel. The US Drug Enforcement Administration has called El Chapo the biggest drug lord of all time. In 2011 he reportedly surpassed the infamous “cocaine king” Pablo Escobar. He was wanted by Mexico, Interpol and the US, which had offered a $5 million reward for any information leading to his capture.
